Leonardo, New Jersey, November 30, 2012. - Ohmsett Resumes Testing After Hurricane Sandy Cleanup

On November 26, Ohmsett – The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility resumed testing after cleaning up and making repairs from the devastating damage of Hurricane Sandy.

Before the storm struck the area, the Ohmsett staff prepared the facility by arranging for the removal of approximately 30,000-35,000 gallons of oil to higher ground on a concrete pad and in a fenced-in area, securing equipment, and shutting down the power to the facility. “This was the second major hurricane to hit the area in two years,” commented Bill Schmidt, program manager for Ohmsett. “We had a plan in place and started the preparations immediately.” The area was evacuated early Monday, October 29 when water from the Sandy Hook Bay starting rising.

On Tuesday, October 30, Naval Weapons Station Earle officials notified Mr. Schmidt of significant damage to the facility. Schmidt and one technician were allowed on-site to begin initial damage assessment and start cleaning up the debris. “The damage was quite substantial. The storm completely destroyed one of our equipment storage buildings; much of its contents were carried by the seven-foot surge from the Sandy Hook Bay and had to be retrieved from the middle of the road, fence line and marsh area,” said Schmidt. “The other, newer storage building was heavily damaged as well. There was flood water in the electrical room, filter building, machine shop, and lab. The classroom and offices were not affected.”

After nine days without electricity, on Wednesday, November 7 power was restored to the facility. Energy Solutions, LLC was contracted to disconnect, clean, test and reconnect multiple electrical feeder cables for the main bridge drive system, tank farm heater, chiller panel, wave generator, and air compressor. Receptacles in the tank farm that were submerged in the flood were replaced, as well as other electrical components located in the filter compressor building, which was flooded with about six inches of water. In addition, Ohmsett staff began testing electrical circuits in the filter building, isolating circuits damaged when the filter compressor and an HVAC located outside the building were ripped off their mounts. After repairing damaged wiring in the electrical room, the staff was able to move the main bridge using one of the two motors.

As cleanup progressed arrangements were made on November 9 for the Navy Crane Service to hoist equipment onto a section of the Navy pier as Ohmsett staff positioned it for the refill/pumping operation. By midday on November 10, the technicians were able to start pumping operations to refill the tank, and on November 15 after five days of the technicians working in shifts from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., the test tank was filled to the operating depth of eight feet and was filtered.

Over the next few days, temporary repairs were made to the damaged storage building to provide a place for equipment. Staff sorted nearly 150 drums of test oil to determine the condition of the drums and their contents, and which drums should disposed of or retained on site for future use. In the final stretch to re-open for testing, gravel was delivered to fill-in the parking lot; dumpsters were emptied; and customers were notified that testing would resume on Monday, November 26.

“It’s amazing what has been accomplished in four weeks. The staff was very dedicated throughout the whole process. Even though they had damage at their own homes, they came in to cleanup and make repairs to get the facility operational again,” said Schmidt. “Our vendors, who we have worked with over the years, really came to our aid and made it possible to resume testing in a short period of time.”

Rockville, MD, September 11, 2010. MAR held a family picnic at Kurtz's Beach on the Chesapeake Bay in Pasadena, MD. The picnic was a huge success as MAR employees and their families enjoyed a beautiful day by the bay. There was all sorts of fun events - everything from face painting and temporary tattoos (even our CEO Mike Norcio took part in the face painting fun!), to a trivia contest, bingo, horseshoes, kids dance contest and great raffle prizes! It was a fun day for the whole family. Employees from our different locations/contracts were able to mingle and share what they do for their customers on a daily basis. Bill Schmidt traveled the farthest coming all of the way from our New Jersey location.

There were four raffle prizes given away on the hour. Raffle prizes included a picnic basket full of goodies for a fall picnic won by Sam Sunukjian's wife Susan; a Sony digital camera won by Doc Lute's wife Cheryl; a Coach purse won by Bobby Granberry's girlfriend Melony; and an ice cream maker won by our very own Becky Quivey.

Bingo was a big hit as the crowd was very competitive. Gift cards to California Pizza Kitchen, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, Outback Steakhouse, and Regal Cinema were won by our very own Gwyneth Hill, Bob Blase, Lynn Golden, Doc Lute's wife Cheryl and George Simonds' wife Mindie.

When party goers arrived at the picnic they were given a sheet of Trivia questions to answer. Employees were getting creative on how to find their answers using their mobile internet devices and asking MAR personnel trick questions hoping to scope out an answer. The Trivia contest was won by Brian Pham, with 10 correct answers out of 12 very challenging questions.

The kids had the best day of all! They played on the playground, took part in arts and crafts, had fun dancing and ended the day with a pińata! After many knocks at the parrot shaped pińata, George Simonds' youngest son was successful with a victorious swing!

Lastly we would like to thank everyone who attended and took part in a great day. MAR is very family oriented company and we like to coordinate events to bring together our employees and their families. Thanks to the Picnic Committee who worked hard in making the picnic go smoothly and providing fun activities for everyone who attended. We look forward to our next MAR event which will be our Christmas Party held at Carmine's Restaurant in Washington, DC on December 4th!

MAR, Incorporated holds an Intern Seminar Day entitled "The Business of Doing Business"

Rockville, MD., August 12, 2008 MAR, Incorporated (MAR) is pleased to announce the success of our Intern Seminar Day! We have found that the key to our success is recruiting employees that we know through friends and family. Some of our best hires have been interns hired right out of high school and college. It is natural that young folks often need the right environment and mentoring to start their careers. That is why MAR developed a training program for our young folks to teach them key business concepts such as "can-do" attitude, networking, office etiquette and politics, conduct with peers and customers, decision making etc. Vice President of Human Resources and Administration Laura Evans stated, "MAR is in the people business! It is our responsibility to train and educate our employees and give them the skills to succeed in the workplace."

The Business of Doing Business Seminar was held on Friday, August 12, 2008 at MAR's corporate headquarters. It started with the interns playing a game called Life--a game that demonstrates real decisions one might be faced with during their lifetime. After each group completed their "game", it was time to get down to business.

When you think of the word "seminar" one may think long lectures and monotone voices, but not this seminar! Mike Norcio, MAR Chairman and CEO, started off the morning by entering the room wearing baggy sweats and a backwards hat. His behavior was kind of odd for him, he was chewing gum and blasting the latest hip-hop jams from his IPOD! That is when everyone knew this was not going to be your ordinary seminar. This, he said, was an example of "first impressions" which would go along with the rest of the days topics presented through group discussion, quizzes, PTI (Pardon the Interruption) format, question and answers, skits, etc. Different topics were lead by various Senior Executive Managers of MAR, people that could pass on their wisdom to the new "business generation".

Overall, the seminar was a huge success, not just because there was pizza and ice cream served, but because the interns came out with knowledge that took some years to learn. The knowledge that with a little effort and believing in yourself you can make your future as bright as you want!
